Glycine Airman 18 Royal World Timer GMT, Ref. 3866 Wristwatch

Glycine Airman 18 Royal World Timer GMT, Ref. Here I have for sale my fantastic Glycine Airman 18 Royal World Timer GMT. The watch is in very good condition and functions exactly as it should. This model was produced by Glycine probably between 2010 and 2016, simply due to the fact that the crown logo lacks "wings" on the dial. Wings were added after the Invicta take-over although now a crown again after a court case with Armani!

Although in very good condition, it is of course a used timepiece and as such one would expect to see some signs of use. There are a few light marks here and there but nothing of concern -please examine the photographs carefully to confirm this. The watch comes on a new black leather strap which compliments the watch nicely. Apparently, Glycine only produced a few examples of this model with a black through blue dial together with the GMT functions. Some were produced as a 24 hour version, this one being the 12 hour variation.

Most too came with a solid screw down case-back with just a select few having. All this makes this particular example quite exclusive.

It also has the advantage of being produced by Glycine at a time when it was a truly independent Swiss watch company with a long and illustrious history of producing "Airman" watches i. Before the company's subsequent takeover by Invicta in August 2016.

The Airman 18 Royal has an uni-directional rotating bezel engraved with 24 hour markings which are finished in black for easy reading. The bezel itself is stainless steel with a coin edge for better grip and an anti-reflective brushed finish. When turning the bezel, it offers a nice amount of resistance and a feeling of precision. It is flat, bevelled at the edge and set slightly above the bezel and exhibits an anti-reflective coating.

The watch has an extremely attractive black through blue dial. It has an inner ring of highly visible white hour markers.

The 24 hour indications appear at the outside edge of the dial. The date appears at 3 (actually marked 6 on the dial), in a contrasting black number on white background for easy reading. The date has a quick correction mechanism.

The watch has four hands. The hour and minute hands are silver with a white lumed interior.

They are quite visible against the dark dial. These hands provide the local time with a standard 12 hour display. The seconds hand is a "bubble" type, with a spot of lume on the bubble.

The fourth hand is white and red tipped, and it provides the time in a second time zone. This hand moves in a 24 hour rotation, so you'll always know if it is day or night in the second time zone. The second time zone hand also has a quick correction mechanism.

All the hand and date setting is accomplished with the crown. After unscrewing the crown, the initial position is for winding. Given a slight pull, the crown clicks into the first setting position, where you turn counter-clockwise to change the date and clockwise to adjust the red second time zone hand. Pulling the crown again allows you to set the hour and minute hands to local time. In this crown position, the seconds "hack" or stop.

The seconds do not hack in the intermediate date/second time zone setting position. A third time zone can be tracked using the rotating bezel. Turn the bezel until the desired time marking on the bezel is opposite the 24 hour hand. It certainly provides a convenient, legible and attractive multi-time zone display. This Airman has a stainless steel case which is brushed on the top with highly polished sides.

The watch is 38 mm in diameter not including the crown, and 10 mm thick. Requiring a 20 mm strap (although here I managed to fit a 22 mm example).

The 38 mm case is really a nice size and many companies are now starting to down size their case sizes -common sense at last! The lugs curve down slightly to give the watch a nice fit on the wrist. The movement, GL293 is based on the ETA 2893-2 automatic winding with 21 or sometimes 24. Jewels and 28,800 vph.

The movement is essentially undecorated, except for the Cotes de Geneve and engraving of an aircraft on the rotor. The plates and bridges are polished, as are the screw heads and exposed steel components. The balance wheel has three spokes and incorporates Incabloc shock protection. It has a good reputation which should give many years of reliable service. Name: Glycine Airman 18 Royal World Timer.

Whenever the subject of aviation comes up, the name of Glycine is mentioned as one of the pioneers of watch-making for pilots and frequent travellers. Beginning in 1953, Glycine started production of the Airman, a watch that became legendary for introducing multiple time-zone watches to the market.

Since then, Glycine has developed an unbroken chain of aviation watches, ranging from successively more complex world timers to unique collector's items.
